The thread Stewart and Harrington don’t actually connect here is that fascism came out of the Industrial Age.
The mechanization of society (i.e. waves of Industrial Revolutions) resulted in both psychic injury as well as ennui.
We use science, technology, engineering and math to offload labor to machines, and then give ourselves bandwidth to sit, think, and contemplate stuff, which affects art, culture, and how people find meaning.
But, some people just don’t find it. And they have a hole in themselves where meaning and purpose are supposed to live.
Then, the bad-faith operators (who are always around) attract those people and fill in the hole with their own Machiavellian and wicked ideas.
